The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most successful franchises in all of professional sports, dating all the way back to their days in Minneapolis....The Lakers have had some of the greatest players ever to grace a basketball court starting with George Mikan and going all the way to present day superstar Kobe Bryant, they have had 3 separate "dynasties" and all have been led by dominant Centers, in the 80s it was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who led the Los Angeles Lakers to titles in '80, '82, '85, '87, and '88 winning Finals MVP in that span and going on to become the NBA's all time leading scorer, but he didnt do it alone for the Lakers, Earvin "Magic" Johnson was the other mainstay in all 5 Championships and he too garnered 2 MVP awards in Finals action, the most recent Los Angeles Lakers juggernaut was spearheaded by Shaquille O'Neal yet another overpowering and dominant giant who propelled the Lakers to World Championships in 2000, 2001, and 2002 with O'Neal taking the MVP award in all 3 title series, he too was greatly aided by yet another superstar Guard the aforementioned Kobe Bryant who will to win drove the Los Angeles Lakers to another level and separated them from the rest of the League.....With all the rich history the Lakers possess it could be argued that they are the most famous Team of all, and with Hall of Famers like Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, and James Worthy, the Los Angeles can boast that they have had the best overall talent through the years that the National Basketball Association has seen.
The team was originally based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and takes their team name from that Minneapolis state’s slogan, “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” The Lakers, were already were a dominating power in pro basketball when they became charter members of the newly formed NBA in the year 1949. Their continued success has made this team 1 of the most celebrated franchises in our professional sports history. This club has won currently 14 NBA championships, including 5 in the 1980s, and leads the NBA with a record of 27 appearances in the NBA Finals to date. In 1971-72 the Lakers’ set a professional sports record for 33 consecutive wins. The Lakers have seen such superstars as George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, James Worthy, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant. The Minneapolis Lakers joined the NBL (National Basketball League) in 1947. Mikan, a 6 ft 10 inch center, now leading the league in scoring, would help the Lakers capture the 1948 NBL title.
The Lakers then moved to the BAA (Basketball Association of America) and went on to win the 1949 BAA title. The BAA and NBL then merged togather to become the now famous NBA (National Basketball Association) after the 1948-49 season, and in the 5 seasons from 1949-50 through 1953-54, the Lakers collected a whopping 4 championships. The Los Angeles Lakers’ dominance came to a holt in 1954, after Mikan retired and the league introduced the 24 second shot clock and put a limit on personal fouls. The rules changes led to a much faster paced game, and the club had a little difficulty making an adjustment. A 19-53 win/loss mark in 1957-58 was the worst in the team history. With the number 1 pick in the 1958 NBA draft, the Lakers selected Elgin Baylor, who went on to be named the NBA's rookie of the year.
The Lakers on their mission to the NBA Finals in 1959, were swept in 4 straight games by the out hustling Boston Celtics. After Mikan’s retirement the fans attendance started to drop and with the financial success of the Dodgers baseball team after their 1958 move over to California from Brooklyn, NY, the teams owner Bob Short decided to move the Lakers from Minneapolis to Los Angeles in 1960. This made it the 1rst NBA franchise team on the West Coast. With a new home and with the NBA draft selection of Jerry West in 1960 the team produced a 2nd Lakers dynasty. 1960 the Lakers were an annual hurdle for many Western Conference team who wanted a shot at the NBA title, but they just could not claim a NBA championship for themselves. In the 8 NBA seasons from 1961-62 to 1968-69, the Lakers captured 6 NBA Western Conference titles only to be defeated by the Celtics in every single NBA Finals. Following the 1969 defeat, West won the MVP (most valuable player) award for the NBA Finals the only member in history of a losing team ever to receive the honor. Gail Goodrich (Guard) was another Laker standout during that time.
Lakers team franchise changed hands during the NBA offseason when Bob Short sold the team to Jack Kent Cooke. Cooke who paid $5 million for the team, which not only represented a huge profit but also established that the value of an NBA franchise was now up in the value of a Major League Baseball team. Cooke left the team intact. Darrall Imhoff (Center) and Walt Hazzard (Guard), who had been backups the season before, moved into the starting lineup for the 1965-66 season. Bob Boozer came to Los Angeles from New York and proved to be a valuable addition when sore knees sidelined Baylor. The Lakers also featured a promising young rookie named Gail Goodrich from UCLA. With West & Chamberlain (who joined the Lakers in 1968), the Lakers went on to win 33 consecutive games in route to a victory over the New York Knicks in the 1971-72 NBA Finals. 1rst year head coach Bill Sharman (a Celtics star) was named NBA coach of the year. A 3rd dynasty was born in 1975, when the Lakers acquired Abdul Jabbar (Center) formally named Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr., the league's premier big man, from the Milwaukee Bucks. During the offseason owner Jack Kent Cooke sold his sports empire, which included the Lakers and the Great Western Forum, to Jerry Buss (a Santa Monica real estate developer) for $67.5 million. Buss brought in Jack McKinney as head coach. By 1979 he had been joined by Magic Johnson (Guard) and Norm Nixon (Guard) and by Michael Cooper (Forward) and Jamaal Wilkes (Forwards) to form the nucleus of an explosive scoring team known as Showtime. Led by Abdul Jabbar (the NBA’s all time leading scorer) and Johnson, the Lakers captured 5 NBA championships titles from 1979-80 to 1987-88. Pat Riley coached the team to 4 of those NBA titles.
In the early 1990s with a group of new NBA stars, led by Vlade Divac (Center), Cedric CebaLos (Forward), and Nick Van Exel (Guard), all helped to keep the Lakers in contention in the NBA Western Conference. Magic Johnson retired in 1991 after being diagnosed with the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). He made 2 unsuccessful comebacks and during the 1993-94 NBA season & briefly filled in as head coach before the club hired coach Del Harris in the off season. After the 1995-96 NBA season the Lakers signed superstar Shaquille O’Neal (Center), formerly of the Orlando Magic, and traded Divac for a young Kobe Bryant (Guard) of the Charlotte Hornets. Over 3 NBA seasons the Lakers tried several different team lineups. They traded CebaLos to the Suns in 1997 and Van Exel to the Nuggets in 1998, to allow more playing time for Kobe. In 1997-98 Los Angeles won 61 games but were defeated by the Utah Jazz in the NBA conference finals. Coach Harris was later fired during the lockout shortened 1999 NBA season, and former Lakers star forward Kurt Rambis took over the direction of the L.A. team. In 1999 they also took a chance and signed veteran Dennis Rodman (Forward) for a short time and traded him for the shooter Glen Rice (Guard) of Charlotte. Before the 1999-2000 NBA season the Lakers hired former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson as the head coach to lead the new team. Jackson brought with him 3 new assistant coaches in Jim Cleamons (a former Lakers 1971-72 squad), Frank Hamblen and Tex Winter, and along with Bill Bertka, that quartet would form 1 of the most experienced assistant coaching teams in the NBA.
The Laker team also took on a different look as veterans Ron Harper, A.C. Green, John Salley and Brian Shaw were added to the roster. In his 1rst year as coach, Jackson guided the new Lakers team to the NBA title, defeating the Indiana Pacers in a 6 games championship series. In 2001 Jackson & the Lakers repeated as NBA champions, winning a record 15 out of 16 NBA playoff games and defeating the explosive Philadelphia 76ers in the Finals in 5 games. The Lakers won their 3rd straight Back to Back-to-Back NBA title the following year, sweeping the New Jersey Nets in the NBA championship series. It was the 1rst Finals sweep in the franchise history. Make sure you buy Cheap Los Angeles Lakers NBA Tickets for all NBA home and away games just Check out Cheap Los Angeles Lakers NBA Tickets. |
