Lakers Sink Pacers Despite Kobe's Injured Ankle - 12/05/06

Kobe Bryant scored 21 points before leaving the game with an ankle injury as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Indiana Pacers, 101-87.

Bryant's injury occurred with 9:34 left in the third after he rolled his ankle following a put back attempt. The superstar watched the rest of the game from the Lakers bench and did not return to the game. His injury is not believed to be serious however.

Kwame Brown scored 17 points while Lamar Odom added 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Lakers, who have won three in a row and eight of 10 overall.

Jermaine O'Neal led the Pacers with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sarunas Jasikevicius added 16 points and five assists while Danny Granger had 15 points for Indiana, which has lost three straight to end its season-long six- game road trip 3-3.

The loss was also the Pacers' eighth in a row on the road against the Lakers as Indiana hasn't beaten Los Angeles on the road since 1999.

LA outscored the Pacers 33-19 in the opening quarter to quickly seize control.

The big run came late in the first with the Lakers nursing a 17-15 lead after an O'Neal tip shot with 4:47 to go. Brown netted the 11-0 spurt's first three points, and after a three-pointer by Bryant, converted a dunk with 3:10 to go to put Los Angeles up 25-15.

After Bryant converted a technical free throw, Luke Walton's lay-up capped the burst with just over two minutes left in the frame.

The Pacers opened up the second with a 9-2 run, with Maceo Baston netting the first seven points -- to get within 35-28 with 9:52 to play.

Ahead by 10 with under five minutes left in the second, LA ripped off an 11-0 run to take a 56-35 edge with 2:32 left.

After two Walton free throws put the Lakers up 60-37 with 1:13 to go, Indiana closed out the half on a 7-0 run to cut its deficit to 60-44 before the break.

LA led 65-44 early in the third before Bryant came out with an ankle injury. Neither team was able to put together a run, though, and the Lakers carried an 83-65 lead into the third.

After trading buckets to start the fourth, Granger netted six straight points and a Jasikevicius jumper pulled the Pacers within 10 at 85-75 with 9:22.

The teams went cold from the floor after that and neither team put points on the board until Jordan Farmar's lay-up with 6:09 to go.

Six straight points by O'Neal cut the Pacers' deficit to 90-83 with just over three minutes to go.

The Lakers, though, went up 13 after a three-point play by Smush Parker with 1:01 remaining.

Game Notes

Walton ended with 10 points while Farmar had nine...Baston had 10 points...The Lakers were opening a four-game homestand...Stephen Jackson played over 24 minutes despite a sore knee and had nine points for the Pacers...The Lakers shot a blistering 51.3 percent from the floor and out rebounded Indiana 41-28.

Newly acquired Peja Stojakovic of the Indiana Pacers scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Indiana Pacers to a convincing 105-79 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers who were playing for the third time in four nights, Wednesday night at Conseco Fieldhouse. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers was held to 26 points, 10 below his league leading average to snap his streak of scoring 30 or more points at eight games. Peja Stojakovic of the Indiana Pacers was recently acquired for problematic Ron Artest, who now plays for the Sacramento Kings, has made quite an impression on his new teammates with his quick release and beautiful looking high arching jump-shot that has made him one of the NBA's most feared marksmen over the past several seasons. "It kind of reminded me of having Reggie Miller again, with him coming off the screens and looking for the ball" Indiana Pacers center Jeff Foster said. "Some of those rainbows coming out of the clouds were reminiscent of Reggie," Anthony Johnson of the Indiana Pacers lamented. It was a forgettable night for the Los Angeles Lakers who drubbed the New York Knicks 130-97 the night before, but received the same sort of treatment they gave the New York Knicks from the Indiana Pacers. Although the Los Angeles Lakers fell behind early on by double figures and trailed by 15 points at halftime, Coach Rick Carlisle of the Indiana Pacers was never fully comfortable while Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers was on the floor. As he was fully aware that Bryant had exploded for 81 points against the Toronto Raptors recently and had scored 55 of those points in the second half. "It's like inviting an assassin to a gathering of living presidents, "Coach Rick Carlisle of the Indiana Pacers said. "You know he can score a zillion points. I have the utmost respect for Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. He competes at the highest of the highest echelon." On this night their would be no heroics or miracle finish for the fatigued Los Angeles Lakers, and the Indiana Pacers poured it on snapping a six game losing streak partly due to the fact they are without the services of All-Star C Jermaine O'Neal and starting point guard Jamaal Tinsley Others picked up the slack for the Indiana Pacers as they got outstanding production from Jeff Foster who had 15 points and 13 rebounds, 14 points and 12 rebounds from rookie Danny Granger, and 16 points from Fred Jones. The Los Angeles Lakers were held to 30% shooting by the Indiana Pacers and were beaten in every facet of the game, Brian Cook of the Los Angeles Lakers scored 12 points, and Chris Mihm and LaMar Odom of the Los Angeles Lakers scored 10 points each, the Los Angeles Lakers next opponent will be the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday February 3rd at Charlotte.
