Lakers 111, Nuggets 115
Veteran actor, George Peppard, whose fictional character Col. "Hannibal" Smith on the popular 1980s television show, "The A Team," was fond of saying, "I love it when a plan comes together" couldn't have described the Denver Nuggets recent play any better.
The Nuggets are making that popular motto from come to life as they are 'coming together' at just the right time. The Nuggets continued their strong play Monday night by beating the Los Angeles Lakers 115-111 behind Carmelo Anthony 's 33 points, Marcus Camby's 22 rebounds and seven blocks and 24 points from Allen Iverson.
''This is probably the best time ever to get the chemistry down,'' Anthony said. ''It couldn't come at a much better time for us.''
The Nuggets have been playing so well lately that the team's other superstar, Allen Iverson, traded to Denver at the trade deadline, is now saying that he always knew the Nuggets would be a good team - at some point.
''I always felt good about my situation,'' Iverson said. ''That was the whole big thing with me. I knew there was going to be one day when 'Melo came back and J.R. came back, and I knew that we'd be able to get into practice and get some offensive and defensive chemistry going.
''I felt I was in a better position than I was in Philadelphia, so I never lost hope or lost focus because I felt the day that we'd be playing good basketball would come,'' Iverson said. ''I'm just happy that it's now that we're headed into the playoffs.''
Iverson's recent admissions aside, it was Anthony's performance that put the Nuggets over the top.
After scoring 30 points, Anthony clinched the win three free throws in the last nine seconds, prompting Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant to comment on the Nuggets' recent play.
''Anthony's playing extremely well, AI's playing extremely well,'' Bryant said. ''The supporting cast is playing extremely well. They are very hot right now.''
The Nuggets moved a game and a half ahead of the Lakers, who have lost six of their last eight - and are headed in the wrong direction at the most inopportune time. The struggling Lakers (40-38) haven't beaten a team with a winning record since defeating Utah on Feb. 26 while losing more games this season than any other Phil Jackson-coached team ever.
Bryant scored 23 points but shot a dismal 9-for-30 from the field. Camby's defensive presence forced the Lakers to alter many of the shots that he didn't block.
''He's a great rebounder,'' Iverson said. ''He'll kill us if we get anywhere near a ball he can get his hands on. If he can get his hands on it and we touch that ball, we're going to hear about it. The ones that are long, we try to get those and the ones that are in the paint, we let Marcus get them.''
Bryant's uninspiring performance included shooting 1-of-5 from 3-point range and missing an important free throw with 1:01 left and the Lakers trailing by a basket.
With 9.7 seconds remaining in the game, the Lakers fouled Anthony, who made one of two to put the Nuggets ahead by three.
Bryant made two foul shots before Anthony was fouled and drained his two free throws to put the Nuggets up 114-111 lead with seven seconds left, effectively ending the game.
