LA Lakers 101, Mavs 110 - 12/13/06
With all the talk about keeping Kobe Bryant under 62, nearly everybody forgot about the offensive problems the Mavericks can pose.
Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson was in the minority, noting before Wednesday's game about the potential havoc that Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard and Jason Terry represented.
He was also right. The Mavericks trio combined for 78 points as the Mavericks scored a much-needed 110-101 victory over the Lakers.
Howard (29 points) and Terry (26) keyed a 12-2 run that helped the Mavericks regain control after the Lakers had forged an 83-83 tie. Nowitzki added 23 points to go with 14 rebounds and eight assists and narrowly missed his first triple-double.
The Mavericks (15-7) shot 60 percent from the field and bounced back from a 22-point loss Monday at Utah.
"It's just energy," Terry said. "We just have to come and play with our energy. When we get off to a good start, we're a lot more confident. When we move the ball, we're a pretty good team.
"It's a team effort, a focus, a mindset of moving the ball."
Nearly twelve months after lighting up the Mavericks for 62, Bryant started slowly. He finished with 33 points, including 17 in the third quarter.
It was the first test for how the Mavericks' collection of Kobe-busters would do in limiting or at least wearing down Bryant.
The Mavericks had spent the much of the summer collecting players who could defend Bryant and other athletic shooting guards.
So former Maverick Greg Buckner came on board. So did Devean George, Bryant's teammate for seven years in Los Angeles who contributed two key steals. Holdovers included Josh Howard and Devin Harris, rapidly developing as a perimeter defender.
In the fourth quarter, when Howard had the primary defensive duty, Bryant was 2-of-6 from the field.
"It's giving the guy a different look each time down the court," Howard said. "He really doesn't know what to expect."
Still the Mavericks needed the late surge, which included a key layup by Devin Harris and a 3-pointer by Terry. Harris' initial layup was blocked by Bryant, but he stole a pass and finally finished.
Nowitzki said Terry's offense created opportunities for everybody else, one of the reason's Johnson wanted him handling the ball more. Terry has averaged 17.2 points in the last five games.
"He has to realize what we need to him to do," Nowitzki said. "We need him to be aggressive offensively. Sometimes, it looks like he wants to get everybody involved but I think he's at his best when he's taking it to the basket and looking for his shot.
"That opens up a lot of things for me and Josh and everybody else. He's got to realize he's an offensive weapon for us."
The Mavericks led 33-21 after the first period, providing the crucial early start that Johnson wanted The halftime entertainment featured an act billed as the world's most flexible man.
Watching him crawl out of a suitcase-sized box and then put his entire body through a tennis racket was only the second strangest at American Airlines Center.
It was topped by Bryant deferring to teammates like Vladimir Radmanovic and Jordan Farmar in the first half. He had just six first-half shots and five points. The Lakers were without second leading scorer Lamar Odom, who was out with a sprained knee.
But even though the Mavericks shot 66 percent in the first half led by Nowitzki's 6-of-6 shooting, they led just 56-47 at halftime.
"We had to keep our composure," Johnson said. "We knew it was going to be a game. We knew Bryant would come back and really be aggressive."
