Los Angeles Lakers Vs Chicago Bulls
When Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant struggled, Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum were there to step up. Odom scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Bynum had 12 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out, carrying the Lakers to their third straight victory, 82-72 over the punch-less visiting Chicago Bulls on Sunday night.
“I just found a way to get in the game,” said Odom after the Lakers improved to 7-3.
“I just took my time, and let the offence work for me.” Bryant netted just 18 points on an icy five-of-14 shooting - the lowest output from the reigning league scoring champ since returning from arthroscopic right knee surgery last summer. But he shrugged off the poor offensive showing.
“It’s nothing for me,” he said. “I just go out there and make sure I keep everyone involved. It’s going to pay dividends for us later on.” With Bryant not at his best, Odom and Bynum shone.
“It was a good game for us,” said Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who improved to 9-4 all-time against his former club. “I thought that perhaps the ball should go to Lamar, but Andrew did a lot of good things.” Bynum was impressive. The seven-foot, second-year centre out of high school, outplayed four-time Defensive Player of the Year Ben Wallace at both ends of the floor.
Afterwards, Wallace said the 19-year-old has all the makings of a budding star in the league.
“He’s a young guy and a solid post player,” said Wallace, who finished with eight points and 12 rebounds. “He knows what his limitations are and he knows what he can do. He stays away from things he can’t do and he just does whatever he can do to help his team. That’s a sign of a great player to come.” The Lakers did just enough to send the stumbling Bulls to their fourth consecutive defeat overall, and sixth in a row on the road. But it was no fault of Argentine forward Andres Nocioni, who torched the hosts for a career-high 30 points on 11-of-21 field goal shooting.
“The last couple of games I really played bad - with turnovers and missing shots,” said Nocioni, who brought a 10.7 scoring average into the game. “When I came here tonight, I just thought about my shot - and playing hard.” Nocioni’s hot shooting kept the Bulls close with 11 third-quarter points. The Lakers took a 62-59 lead into the fourth before he tied the score with one of his six 3-pointers - the only field goal by Chicago in the first 8:03 of the final period. The Lakers went on a 12-1 surge to open a 74-63 cushion with 4:47 remaining. But the Bulls pulled to within 74-70 with 3:12 to go on a short jumper by Nocioni and Ben Gordon’s 3-pointer. (DPA)
