Why Kobe Bryant Should Not Abandon Lakers
Do you hear me? You, yes you, with a healthy dose of jumpers, drives and dunks, and a sight to behold.
You with a silky-smooth, butter-shooting, dunk-on-you-at-any-time show. You with guts, acrobatic moves and talent that you have harnessed right before our very eyes.
Yes, you with good looks and a flash of mega-watt smile. You, yes you, Kobe Bryant.
I know you're frustrated. Mad. Hopeless.
Your acidic discontent is growing, and you want out of the Los Angeles Lakers, right?
You have given us Lakers fans wonderful moments, but you just can't give us championship moments once again.
After your break-up with Shaquille O'Neal three years ago, the Lakers have fallen fast - and fallen hard. And you're alarmed, huh?
Maybe you feel that your chances of winning an NBA championship ring with the Lakers are nearing zero.
But wait. Listen.
No matter how bad things have been and how much the team needs help, you will still be "the man", just as the Lakers can never be reincarnated without you.
With Shaq out and a lineup bereft of marquee players, you are left to steer the ship that is the LA Lakers. You are the captain of that ship.
But unlike Captain Hook in J M Barrie's novel Peter Pan, you're not the magnificent villain. You're the captain of the ship and the captain of the show - and the Lakers will be forced to swim or sink with you.
Believe me, I am a die-hard Michael Jordan fan during and even after the golden era of the Chicago Bulls; you are the only reason why I shifted my loyalty to the Lakers.
As long as you're around, I will always be a Lakers fan.
If you go, what would that leave us Lakers fans with?
Heck, this team might end up a sorry waste.
Leave, Kobe , and Shaq is going to write a tribute rap song for you. That should jolt your heart back to life, baby.
So do you hear me?
You. Can't. Leave. Just. Yet.
Leaving the Lakers at a tender age of 27? With only three titles tucked under your belt? You're a future Hall of Famer and a would-be legend?
C'mon, that's no way for a hero to go.
If you will be playing for a ragtag team in a barrio fiesta in the Philippines , I'd probably be more at peace with that. Or maybe if you decide to play for a basketball team in Timbuktu , fine.
No, Kobe , the Lakers need you.
Okay, some say the Lakers are history, done, finished and blown-up after that Shaq-Kobe divorce.
I disagree.
You are a Laker for a reason.
Kobe is about winning so much so that the name Lakers is also about winning.
Silence
Many say winning is not everything, but to me, it's the only thing. You play to win, not to lose.
In the end, only that - winning - will silence your critics. Only that will satisfy you. And only that will mesmerise Lakers fools like me.
If the Lakers lose, pistol fingers will surely be pointed at you because you are the franchise player of the team. So you really have to win, kid.
You see, greatness is when you win a lot of games, make your team-mates better, and do a lot of good things out on the floor. And win a championship, of course. That makes a player great.
Doing your part is not enough - you have to do your best.
But, hey, if you still failed after giving your best, don't worry. Stay cool. It would be alright - it would be alright.
It's not yet the end of the road for you and the Lakers.
Look to the future, Kobe .
I know you'll get over it. Yes, you will. And you should.
So if I were you, I will stay as a Laker.
Still, if I were you, Kobe , this is what I would do: Take a short break. Walk down the park. Look for flowers. Look for roses - make that red. Pause. Smell the roses - and smile.
