Lakers Draft Javaris Crittenton #19
The Los Angeles Lakers picked Javaris Crittenton with the 19th pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. Crittenton is a 6'5" guard from Georgia Tech. It's the second year in a row the Lakers selected a 19-year old point guard in the draft after choosing Jordan Farmar in 2006.
While Farmar is generously listed at 6'2", Crittenton has the kind of size Coach Phil Jackson likes in a one.
In addition, the Lakers have reportedly made an offer to the 30-year old Greek point guard Theodoros Papaloukas, perhaps the top available European player. If he accepts their overtures, he'd get most or all of the team's mid-level exception (~$6 million) in a four or five year deal.
Assuming the Lakers can mend fences with star Kobe Bryant, the team's backcourt will be a crowded one with Bryant, Papaloukas, Farmar, Crittenton, Sasha Vujacic and Mo Evans.
It's difficult to anticipate who will make the opening night roster as the Lakers are aggressively looking to make a deal to improve the team. So far there's been no movement . . . especially on the Kevin Garnett front which remains a long shot.
The Lakers are trying though and until Garnett ends up on another team's roster, he's in the mix.
In the meantime, the Lakers landed a solid prospect in Crittenton. He can penetrate and get to the basket, dish or finish. He's got potential to be a strong NBA defender, giving the Lakers some needed athleticism in the backcourt.
Crittenton is still a bit raw which raises questions as to how ready he'll be to contribute right away, but at 19 the Lakers got good value with their pick.
Leading into the draft, they didn't expect Crittenton to be available at 19, thinking they'd likely draft some size. Should the team make a significant trade, they'd likely lose depth in the front court . . . but when Crittenton fell they went with the best player available who happened to also fill a need.
