Lakers Season is Over
As expected, the Los Angeles Lakers were easily defeated by the Phoenix Suns in the first round of this year's playoffs. Year three without Shaquille O'neal has come and gone, and the Lakers seem to be right back at square one.
With a quick 26-13 start, the Lakers initially looked like they had improved to a point that they would be able to make some noise in this year's playoffs. Well, that was before the Lakers starting front court of Lamar Odom, Kwame Brown and Luke Walton, as well as their resident snowboarder, Vlad Radmanovic, went down to a variety of injuries. Odom missed 26 games and played another 20-30 games with a bad shooting shoulder. Luke Walton missed 22 games with a bad ankle that still hasn't healed. Kwame Brown missed 41 games with a severely sprained ankle. While Slalom Vlade missed, 27 games with a separated shoulder. When you thrown in the fact that the Lakers were already missing last year's starting center, Chris Mihm, you can see why they struggled.
As usual, Kobe Bryant was spectacular, leading the league in scoring for the second consecutive season, while literally carrying this struggling, beat up team to a playoff spot. But not even Kobe could overcome the injuries that depleted the Lakers this season.
The Lakers experiment of Smush Parker as their starting point guard finally blew up in their faces. Smush overachieved all of last season, but came into this season with an attitude that wasn't beneficial to himself or the team. Smush had the opportunity to start on the Los Angeles Lakers, but let his anger and his arrogance over his contract and his role ruin a golden opportunity. It's safe to say that Smush won't be back next year.
The Lakers have six free agents (Smush, Turiaf, Walton, Mihm, McKie and Williams), with Walton, Mihm and Turiaf the most likely to return.
Despite the negative vibe around the Lakers at the moment, I don't think they are as in as bad of shape as some would have you think. They have the best player and the best coach in the league. And if not for injuries, they would have been a much improved team. In the off season, the Lakers front office will have opportunities to improve this team. Lacking cap space, they will have to utilize their mid-level exception and first round draft pick wisely. As well, with several disgruntled stars around the league, they'll have an opportunity to pick up to try and trade for someone that can come in and help right away. The ball's in your court, Mitch Kupchak.
