Lakers show Clippers who is boss

April 6th, 2012

The Hallway Series became really intriguing this season when the Clippers exploded onto the NBA scene for the first time in franchise history. With a roster rivaling a posse full of hired guns, any physical or psychological advantage that the Lakers had enjoyed suddenly flew out the windows of Staples Center. In a contest that saw heated confrontations and playoff atmosphere intensity, the designated road team Los Angeles Lakers withstood the aerial attack of Lob City, beating the LA Clippers 113-108, in their own house.

Kobe scored 31 points and hit the go-ahead shot with nearly three minutes left, and the Lakers claimed another installment of their LA rivalry with a 113-108 triumph to snap the Clippers’ six-game winning streak.

Bynum and Brayant powered the Lakers to an impressive 34-29 advantage at the end of one.

Bynum returned from a one-game absence and dominated with 36 points, eight rebounds and four blocks, as the Lakers won their fourth straight contest and moved 2 1/2 games ahead of the Clippers for first place in the Pacific Division.

Bynum, who missed Tuesday’s four-point win over the Nets due to a sprained left ankle, went 10-of-12 from the foul line.

Caron Butler had 28 points and Chris Paul tallied 22 points and 16 assists, but the Clippers had their seven-game home winning streak snapped. Blake Griffin totaled 15 points and 14 rebounds, while DeAndre Jordan scored 11 to go with 13 boards.

Bryant’s jumper from the right baseline boosted the visitors to a 105-104 lead with 3:02 left, and the Clippers self-destructed down the stretch.
With possession and a chance to tie the game, Butler lost the ball out of bounds under the basket with a minute left.

Ramon Sessions, who was acquired three weeks ago from Cleveland, then drove to the hoop hard for a layup with 47.4 seconds left and a 108-104 difference.
Paul came back by hitting a quick jumper, but Bryant then rose up from the left baseline, and despite a hand in his face, swished in a jumper with 24.5 on the clock. Bryant then spread his arms in an airplane motion coming off the court during the ensuing Clippers timeout.

Chris missed a three-point shot, and Paul Gasol and Matt Barnes combined to go 3-for-4 from the foul line in the closing seconds.

The Lakers held a 34-29 lead after one quarter and were in front by as many as 12 in the second before holding a 63-55 edge at the half. Bynum scored 12 in the third, a period that ended with the Lakers holding a 92-81 lead. The Clippers finally went back in front, 104-103, on a Jordan hook shot in the lane.

Two successive defensive stops by the Lakers was rewarded when in a strong Sessions scored on an aggressive dribble drive giving them a 108-104 lead with 47.4 seconds remaining.

CP3 scored immediately out of a Clipper time-out to make it a one possession game, but the Black Mamba put the the Lakers back in front by four when he spun away from the double team and nailed a fall-away 21-footer from the other corner. A 20-second time-out resulted in CP3 missing badly on a long three under duress, then Paul was fouled on the ensuing rebound. Gasol converted 1-2 free throws to ice the game for good with 18.2 left on the clock.

The Lakers played a well-rounded game, and except for their slip-up to open the 4th quarter, put some uncertainty back into the minds of their roommates. The Lakers now lead the Clippers by 2.5 games and hold the tie-breaker should the two teams end the season with the same records. Laker fans can only hope that this win transcends into some much needed momentum heading into the stretch run because the #3 seeded purple and gold still need to face a familiar foe three times in the next two weeks.

When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, March 31, 2012
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
Hornets Vs Lakers Tickets are still available for todays game at the LA Staples Center.

THE STORY: After losing to the best team in the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Lakers will get a chance to bounce back against the worst. The Lakers have scuffled along with four losses in the past seven games, pointing to defense as the culprit. Los Angeles has allowed at least 100 points in each of the four losses. The New Orleans Hornets should be an easier test, ranked 29th in the NBA in scoring.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, FSW (Los Angeles), CST (New Orleans), NBATV

ABOUT THE HORNETS (13-38): Jarrett Jack scored 30 points in the Mar. 14 meeting to keep New Orleans in the game but might not be able to go on Saturday. Jack (ankle) is just the latest in a long line of Hornets injuries this season. Chris Kaman (flu) and former Laker Trevor Ariza (ankle), have also been ailing of late, joining Eric Gordon (knee) and Emeka Okafor (knee) on the bench. New Orleans dressed only eight players for Thursday’s 99-93 loss at Portland. Coach Monty Williams has used five different starting lineups in the past five games.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (31-20): Los Angeles could not find a way to contain Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant on Thursday and have had trouble stopping most teams of late. The Lakers have allowed an average of 100.6 points in the last seven contests, up from a season mark of 93.7. They even had trouble stopping the Hornets in Los Angeles on Mar. 14, needing overtime to secure a 107-101 triumph. The Lakers were trailing by 15 points in the second half of that game before Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum drove them back. Bryant is in a terrible slump, shooting 34.6 percent over the last four games, including 4 for 19 from beyond the arc.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Lakers beat a very different Hornets team in the first round of the playoffs last spring.

2. Bryant has averaged 25.8 points on 45.2 percent shooting in 41 career games against the New Orleans franchise.

3. Los Angeles begins a streak of three straight games against losing teams with the Hornets.

PREDICTION: Lakers 97, Hornets 88.

2012 Lakers Playoff Tickets

March 26th, 2012

As the basketball season winds down, the excitement heats up as another NBA Playoff season kicks off for a battle to win the national championship.

Lakers may undoubtedly be one of the greatest franchises in the history of professional sports. The Lakers have made an astounding 47 playoff appearances, captured the division title 27 times, made 25 NBA Finals appearances and won the NBA championship 11 times throughout their LA history.

The team won its first championship in 1972 thanks to the remarkable play of Wilt Chamberlain, Gail Goodrich and Jerry West. The Lakers would later enjoy their most impressive run during the 1980s, when they ascended to dynasty status by capturing the NBA championship in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988.

After a period of rebuilding, the Lakers would return as a top contender with the pairing of All-Stars Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal to capture five championships in the 2000s. The team capped off their 50th season in Los Angeles with yet another championship win in 2010, laying the groundwork for several more decades of playoff success.

Of course, some of the greatest contributors to the team’s postseason success are the stellar coaches and players who have made their mark in the history of NBA lore. Coaching greats Pat Riley, Bill Sharman and Phil Jackson have led Laker squads to several championship wins, and legends such as Chamberlain, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have sported the yellow and purple in many a playoff game.

The 2012 NBA Playoffs are scheduled to start on April 28th, 2012 with the last possible 2012 NBA Finals date scheduled for June 26th, 2012. They seeding rewards the teams that have the best record. There are some caveats; however, as a divisional winner is guaranteed to be seeded no worse than #4. The other tiebreakers that are used to determine the seeding for the 2012 NBA Playoffs.

There were six coaching changes made prior to the start of the 2011-12 NBA season. Of note is the LA Laker’s coach, Phil Jackson, heading into retirement again after failing to make the NBA finals in his final season.

Just like past years, the 2012 NBA Playoffs will feature 8 teams in each conference. Divisional winners earn automatic playoff spots and the five teams with the best records after the division champs earn the right to play in the post season. The teams are seeded based on record and matched up according to seed. For example, the #1 seed in each conference will play the #8 seed from that same conference. Each round of the playoffs consists of a best of 7 series with a total of four rounds in the tournament culminating with the 2012 NBA Championship.

Los Angeles Lakers are overall favorite to win 2012 NBA Championship, beside Miami Heat. These two teams are on a collision course towards meeting in the Finals which will definitely not disappoint.
