Grizzlies beat LA Lakers 106-98 to retain 1st seed in the West

November 25th, 2012

On a matchup of the Gasol brothers, the Memphis Grizzles led by Rudy Gay with 21 points topped the Lakers in this Western Conference match-up. The Grizzles really controlled the game almost all the way having the upper hand on the score board.

Memphis got itself a solid contribution from Zach Randolph, who added his 11th double-double in 11 games, finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Also, Mike Conley had a pretty good game, scoring 19 points, including two clutch baskets in the last minutes of the game. The team shot a nice 54,5% behind the arc and survived a last moment comeback from the Lakers sparkled by Kobe Bryant, who finished with 30 points, 14 of those in the final period. The gap had reached 14 points late in the third quarter, but Los Angeles was able to trim it to just 5 (95-90) with almost 6 minutes left in the game. Jamison and Metta World Peace added 16 each, with Jamison hitting a buzzer beater in the end of the 3rd quarter.

For LA, Howard had another shallow performance finishing with 7 points and 4 rebounds. Pau Gasol added 6 points and another 4 rebounds while his brother had 14 points, a game high 8 assists in quite an adequate performance making thing easier for his teammates. “We need to figure that one out,” D’Antoni said. Lakers opened the last quarter making six 3-pointers, but that was just not enough. Lakers start of 6-7 this season is the worst in franchise history after 2005 when they entered 5-8. They also continue to struggle on the road, 0-4 and counting.

The Grizzlies outscored the Lakers 40-24 in the paint and forced them to 15 turnovers. It has been a really good defensive set up for them this so far this season. They really look in a good shape with great team work and good understanding of each other. They finished with 23 assists. “I have said from the beginning that that’s been the thing that I have been most impressed (with) even in training camp. They have been committed to each other” , said coach Lionel Hollins.

The capacity crowd at the FedExForum, included star singer and actor Justin Timberlake with his wife Jessica Biel.

Next for the Memphis, Monday vs Cavaliers and for the Lakers, Saturday against Dallas Mavericks.
